Cool Stuff #3

Coolest pop song EVER -  ਤੁਨਕ ਤੁਨਕ ਤੁਨ (Tunak Tunak Tun) by ਦਲੇਰ ਮਹਿੰਦੀ (Daler Mehndi).  The music video for the song is practically as famous as the song itself; however, as is the case with many music videos, the song is

shortened.  So, I will post it twice.

Here's the entire song:

And here's the awesome music video, albiet a shortened version of the song:

I only had to hear it once and I was hooked.  It's crazy-infectious, not to mention refreshing!

When I think of sitars in pop music, the first song that comes to my mind is this one:

What it there to say about The Rolling Stones's "Paint It Black" except CLASSIC?

Finally, a song by Sting and شاب مامي‎ (Cheb Mami), a famous راي (raï - folk music of the Bedouin shepherds) singer - Desert Rose.  Beautiful and eclectic.  It was overplayed back in its hayday, but has always been a very nice listen.  It's wonderful to hear to completely different worlds of music fitting togeather like two pieces of a puzzle.  I realize how cliché that statement sounds, but I've got nothing else.  Sorry.

Anna and I both thought of this song, but she let me post it.  Thanks, Anna.  :-)

  1. The first two videos of the same song are strangely addicting O_o It's very repetitive though.
It's really cool how you can hear so many different instruments from other countries in today's music. (especially after taking this class.) I've found some songs in my ipod with instruments from India, China, etc. Its really cool.

  2. So the Tunak Tunak Tun video is definitely intertaining to watch, haha. It is really catchy too which funny. I really like classic rock, so thanks for the Sting and the Rolling Stones videos. I didn't realize that the instrument in "Paint it Black" was a citar.

  3. The second video was definately fun to watch, I love how he dances and has that silly look on his face.
I didn't realize that "Paint it Black" was a sitar until you posted it for the blog. It was interesting to see how music of other cultures effects our pop culture in the States.
I have never heard the last song but I immediately liked it and will now have to add it to my ipod. Thanks! :)

  4. Bahahahahaha. The internet had brought the first song to my attention. Can't help but do some sort of bobbing groove thing to it. xD
& Kristen Albert had posted Paint It Black on her blog too, I had never noticed there was a sitar in it and goodness only knows that I've heard the song more than enough times than to have picked up on it.
& thank you for broadening my exposure to Sting. =]

  5. First off, that pop song is awesome! I also enjoyed the video, I need to get some outfits like that! And of course props on the Sting! One of my favorite songs as a kid! My mom actually bought me the solo CD of Cheb Mami. It was great! If I only knew where it was.

  6. Holy crap Jason! I have to say that I failed to think of the Rolling Stones song when I thought of American music with the sitar in it. I kept thinking of the Beatles' song "Norwegian Wood" and for the longest thought that The Doors' song "The End" featured a sitar. I really like the Tunak Tunak Tun song as well. It makes you feel happy.

  7. Yes, that Tunak Tun song just might be the best pop song ever! :-)

And Sting has done some stuff that's very, very cool. Have you checked out his John Dowland CD? Incredibly interesting.
